Mountain Hiking in Uganda
You may be familiar with the Alps, the Caucus, the Himalayas or even the Rockies. However, with the Rwenzori “Mountains of the Moon” you have something wonderfully new to explore.
Standing 5,119 m high, the mountain offers snowy challenges on its peak while the fragile endemic vegetation along the trails is a rare beauty. A trip into the Rwenzoris is an exhilarating experience, but one that must be well-planned. You can do the central circuit in just seven days or - for the more adventurous- explore the peaks.
The Rwenzoris are not the only attraction for hikers in Uganda; there is the famous Mount Elgon in the east. Standing 4,321m tall, it is the 4th highest mountain in East Africa. Most of this area is covered with typical afro-montane vegetation, complete with giant groundsels and bamboo forest. The mountain offers a milder climate and lower elevation than the Rwenzoris and climbing the peaks requires no special equipment or technical climbing experience. It is possible to summit the mountain in as few as three days, but a slightly longer visit will permit a more thorough exploration.
