Uganda Birdwatching Safaris Africa
With a vegetation range from eastern savannah to western rainforests, Uganda is one of the world’s one-stop sites for bird-watchers. With more than 600 species in Queen Elizabeth National Park alone, specialist birding tours through Uganda routinely notch up a tally of about 400 species within two weeks.
For professional ornithologists, there are more than 100 West African forest species to see. They include the psychedelic Great Blue Turaco and the raucous Black-and-White Casqued Hornbill, as well as the gem-like Green Broadbill, in addition to 23 other species endemic to the East African Rift Valley. Uganda is the best place to see the most sought after African bird - the Shoebill, a massive prehistoric-looking swamp-dweller notable for its heavy clog-shaped bill.
There is prolific bird life throughout the country, but some places of birding significance include Bwindi National Park for Albertine Rift endemics, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Semuliki National Park for Congo Basin endemics, Mabamba Swamp near Entebbe for Shoebill, Bigodi Wetland near Kibale Forest for Great Blue Turaco and other colourful forest birds and Murchison Falls National Park for savannah specialists such as the Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Red-Throated Bee-Eater and Denham’s Bustard. In eastern Uganda is Lake Bisina, where you can find the Fox’s Weaver as well as papyrus-dwellers such as the Shoebill and Papyrus Gonolek.
