BSR Foundation
We support some community projects around Lake Bunyonyi. You can volunteer your time, skills or finance towards these projects. The focus is on environmental conservation, wealth creation and education. The issues are land degradation, poverty, HIV aids, death by drowning in the lake and illiteracy. Through a nonprofit organization known as Women’s Shelter Uganda, you can donate money towards any of the following projects. We also accommodate volunteers at highly reduced rates at our resort. Sponsors are entitled to special favors while at our resort. We encourage all sponsors to visit and interact with the local people and see for themselves the lives they are changing.
Swimming and Life Saving Skills(SLSS):
The program focuses on children and willing adults. We encourage volunteers to teach swimming and life saving skills. Many lives are lost as people attempt to cross the lake to reach their gardens or visit communities on hills across the lake. We lost our watch man who drowned in the lake a few years back. You can donate towards this program. Hired trainers can handle the lessons on a regular basis.
HIV and AIDS education and awareness (HIV):
We handle HIV and AIDS awareness in two ways:
• Drama groups – these are trained on how to perform performances that can convey the message to the local community. Recital of poems, music, dance and drama are all used. The performances are done in schools, at community gatherings and in churches.
• HIV and AIDS testing camps and counseling. Using a mobile clinic from the nearby hospital facilities, the local community is encouraged to test for HIV and know their status. Council ling services are also offered on those days and people are educated on the dangers of HIV aids.
Widow and orphans projects (W&O):
The aim of these projects is to fight hunger and illiteracy. The objective is to get sponsors who can donate towards:
• The education of orphans. • Giving a goat to disadvantaged family.
• Poultry rearing for a family,
• Mattresses, blankets, bed sheets and clothes.
• Building of food stores.
• Building of houses.
Educational Programs(EP).
These programs need volunteers and sponsors for:
• skills development
• lab equipment
• Tools for carpentry.
• Sewing machines
• Books and computers.
Sports Academy (SD):
Promoting sports talent, music, dance and drama.
Land Management Self Help Projects (LMSHP):
These include agro forestry programs whereby farmers plant trees with their crops for livestock feed, and soil conservation. Tree nurseries for tree seedlings and other crops need to be set up to support this project.
Piggery and Goat Project (P&G):
In this project, a family is given a goat or a pig. They then donate two animals to the scheme for further distribution. The scheme facilitates training of farming on how to take care of the livestock, plant trees for livestock feed. It also facilitates veterinary services.
